Sporting excellence and achievement in Charnwood has been celebrated at an annual awards ceremony.
The 14th Charnwood Sports Awards were held at Burleigh Court in Loughborough. The event, which is organised and run by Charnwood Borough Council, recognised the work and dedication of individuals, clubs, coaches and volunteers across the borough.
It also highlighted workplaces and schools making a difference to health and wellbeing.
A total of 12 awards were handed out on the night. Loughborough University student Daniel Wiffen was crowned Senior Sports Person of the Year on the back of his brilliant swimming gold medal in the men’s 800m freestyle at the Olympic Games in Paris.
Up-and-coming 800m runner Shaikira King was named Junior Sports Person of the Year, while masters shot put and discus thrower Gillian Astle was the recipient of the Mayor’s Special Recognition Award.
Loughborough Foxes Women's Football Club picked up the Club of the Year award, with Team of the Year going to Loughborough Students Athletics Club BUCS.
Councillor Liz Blackshaw, the Council’s lead member for communities and neighbourhoods, said:
“The Charnwood Sports Awards are a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the incredible talent, dedication and passion within our community."
“From athletes and coaches to volunteers and schools, these awards highlight the vital role sport plays in improving health, wellbeing and community spirit across the borough. It was wonderful to see the remarkable achievements of so many individuals and groups given the recognition they deserve at this year’s awards ceremony."
“Congratulations to all the winners and nominees—you are truly inspirational and should be extremely proud.”
The awards ceremony was hosted by BBC Radio Leicester’s Adam Whitty, and Councillor Jewel Miah - leader of Charnwood Borough Council – gave an opening speech to welcome guests and praise all the nominees.
